"Classic Setting, Disappointing Meal at Restaurant Agut"

We dined at Restaurant Agut a few days ago, drawn by its rich history and glowing reputation. The atmosphere was undeniably charming—classic and full of life. We arrived just as the lunch rush began, and within 30 minutes, the restaurant was completely full, buzzing with conversation. Most of the clientele appeared to be long-time patrons—many grey-haired seniors who seemed to be enjoying their daily prix fixe lunch in a place that feels like a neighborhood institution. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the setting or the service. For our first course, I ordered the Sopa de Pescado while my companion had the Cola de Gamba rebozada en panko con salsa agridulce. My fish soup was disappointing—watery, extremely fishy, and lacking any complementary flavors. It contained a few clams and some rice, but overall it was unappetizing. I only managed a few spoonfuls. In contrast, my companion’s shrimp dish was much better—crispy and plump, with a sweet sauce that balanced the dish nicely. The second course brought more imbalance. I had the Brócoli con Jamón y Panceta gratinado con bechamel trufada, which felt like a dish designed for a clientele with very soft palates. The broccoli was mushy and swimming in bechamel sauce that smothered any trace of jamón or truffle flavor. It was bland and heavy, and I couldn’t finish it. My companion fared slightly better with the Provoleta al horno, though it too had its flaws—overly salty cheese and too few tomatoes to provide balance. For the third course, we both ordered the Magret con Parmentier de boniato y reducción de Oporto. At last, we hoped, a winner. Sadly, the experience was inconsistent. My duck portion was significantly larger than my companion’s and unfortunately undercooked—rare, tough, and not properly infused with the wine reduction. Her smaller portion, on the other hand, was cooked to perfection—tender, flavorful, and beautifully balanced with the sweet potato mash. It was the highlight of the meal—for her. Dessert was the saving grace. My Pastel de Manzana was rich and satisfying, and my companion enjoyed her locally made ice cream (helado), though it wasn’t made in-house. Despite the uneven food, the service was genuinely excellent. Friendly, attentive, and professional throughout the meal. Overall, while Restaurant Agut offers a nostalgic, local dining experience and standout service, the food was inconsistent and often underwhelming. Given the many options in Barcelona, I likely won’t return—but I can understand why it holds a special place for so many regulars.

"Charming Atmosphere and Thoughtfully Prepared Dishes"

This restaurant offers a very particular and pleasant atmosphere that sets the tone for a great dining experience. The dishes are beautifully presented, with portions that are just right—generous without being overwhelming. Each plate was well-prepared, showcasing quality without inflating the price. The service was equally commendable: attentive, professional, and thoughtful throughout. A great spot for those who appreciate a refined yet relaxed dining experience.

"Disappointed by the Decline in Quality"

I came with high expectations, hoping to relive the excellent dining experience I once had here. Unfortunately, I left quite disappointed. The overall quality has noticeably declined—especially the desserts, which were poorly made and far from what they used to be. It’s truly a shame to see how much has changed. Given this experience, I don’t think I’ll be returning.

"A Classic That Still Delivers"

This veteran restaurant, dating back to 1924 and located in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, has seen some changes in management. I had visited before, when it was of a slightly higher category, but I’m happy to say the food remains excellent and plentiful. The seafood paella is one of the best I’ve ever had—rich, flavorful, and satisfying. Despite visiting on a particularly busy day, the service was very good. We’ve returned again since, and once more left satisfied. The service continues to shine, and while the paella seemed a bit smaller this time, it was just as delicious.

"Disappointing Experience – Overcharged for Paella"

Unfortunately, our experience was ruined by a dishonest interaction with our waiter, Jorge. We clearly ordered 2 paellas, but he brought 4 and insisted we had requested that amount. When I attempted to clarify and complain, he refused to listen and continued to claim we had ordered 4. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and leaves a very bad impression. It’s a shame, as we came expecting to enjoy a good meal. I would strongly advise management to review this issue and train staff to be more honest and professional.

"Pleasantly Surprised"

I’m very picky when it comes to paella, but this one impressed me—I'd give it a solid 8 out of 10. I was told it's cooked over charcoal embers, which gives it a unique and delicious flavor. The rice was perfectly cooked and very tasty. While the quality of the seafood could be improved, at €19 per portion, it’s hard to complain. Service was efficient. I’ll definitely return.

"Mixed First Impressions, But Overall a Pleasant Experience"

It’s unfortunate that a place of this caliber, where attentive service should be a key feature, greeted us with a young waiter who was noticeably rude and lacking in manners. Fortunately, once we were seated, another waiter took over—and I must say, he was very professional and courteous, which helped redeem the experience. The food met our expectations, and the ambiance was pleasant. A good overall experience, despite the rocky start.

"Delicious Food and Excellent Service"

The food was a great success—flavorful and well-prepared. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. Just a tip: be sure to make a reservation in advance, as it tends to fill up quickly!

"A Classic Worth Visiting"

A charming, classic spot with a pleasant atmosphere and professional service. The cuisine is a bit uneven—some dishes truly shine while others fall short. It's usually full, so making a reservation is highly recommended. Stick with their signature or traditional dishes, which tend to be the most reliable. A solid wine list complements the meal, and overall, the quality-to-price ratio is fair.
