"Great service – but oh so hot"

We stayed a couple of nights at this Guest House and, unfortunately, the extreme June heat combined with an air conditioner that wasn’t very efficient made our stay quite uncomfortable. However, Avnish was outstanding at organizing everything for us—he arranged rail bookings, taxis, and provided excellent tourist advice on what to see and do. Being picked up at the airport amid all the hustle and bustle was especially appreciated. The service and food were both very good, and the level of care was faultless. We were simply unlucky with the weather. Perhaps the lower-floor rooms are cooler than the top-floor room we stayed in—worth asking when reserving!

"Not bad, but be careful"

I chose this place based on positive TripAdvisor reviews, but my experience was more mixed. The first issue was poor attention to emails – my booking request was confused with another guest’s, and later, when I sent a confirmation email the day before arrival, I received an autoreply saying the owners were on vacation. Luckily, a driver was still at the airport with a letter explaining everything. There was also a misunderstanding about meals included in the price, though a helpful staff member eventually resolved it. The rooms were quite spacious and nicely designed, while the bathrooms (shared by three rooms) were small but clean. Air conditioning worked well in the rooms, though the common areas were uncomfortably hot. Food felt overpriced, and I’d recommend eating out in the city if possible. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the drivers arranged through the property were inconsistent. One driver for Agra was fine, but another for Delhi spoke no English, and the driver who took us to the airport was sent to the wrong terminal despite clear instructions, and the car was not air-conditioned as paid for. Overall, the stay was okay but not as seamless as expected. If you decide to book, make sure every detail is double-checked in advance to avoid surprises.

"A super b and b!"

This place truly feels like a retreat—quiet, soothing, and peaceful. The interiors are tastefully designed with an ambience that immediately calms frayed nerves, which was exactly what I needed during a very stressful time. The owner is incredibly warm and welcoming, making me feel as if I were a guest in her own home. The location is also very convenient, with markets and shopping areas nearby, yet it still maintains a serene atmosphere. I cannot think of a single thing that disturbed my senses. I would absolutely love to stay here again whenever I get the chance. — Meera Bakhru, Mumbai

"Ideal Location"

This facility was unfortunately under reconstruction when I arrived, and the rooms booked for the rest of our party were not available, forcing us to relocate. It was disappointing, but I must commend the brilliant staff who did their best to assist us. The location is ideal, and despite the inconvenience, I would still choose to stay here on my next trip to New Delhi. Hopefully, the builders will be on schedule by then!

"Quaint Decorative Guesthouse – Beware of Hidden Costs and Fees"

My friend and I stayed at Masters for 3 nights in Delhi after it was recommended by a friend who had stayed there previously. The guesthouse itself is lovely—art pieces everywhere, comfortable rooms, well-organized meal service with reasonably priced and tasty food, and excellent Chai! Its central location makes it easy to access markets, sights, and attractions. The owners, Avnish and his wife, are kind and welcoming, and they aim to provide guests with a personalized “hidden jewels” experience of Delhi. While the wife was warm and helpful, Avnish’s manner can be overwhelming as he tends to talk non-stop and name-drop, which can make tours feel more like lectures. We opted out of one of his tours because of this and were met with unnecessary shaming for doing so. The biggest disappointment was with the cost and handling of our day trip to Agra. We had an email confirmation from Avnish’s wife quoting the trip at 5,000–8,000 INR, but were charged 11,000 INR without honoring the prior agreement. We were also given a larger vehicle without being told it would increase the cost. Unfortunately, during the trip, we were pressured into accepting an unplanned tour guide who rushed us through the Taj Mahal, took us to shops we didn’t want to visit, and expected tips. The entire situation felt uncomfortable and left us feeling taken advantage of. When we shared this with Avnish, he placed the blame on us for not calling him at the time and got the driver fired but made no adjustment to the inflated bill. This left a sour note, as we felt our disappointment was acknowledged but not resolved. In summary, the guesthouse is beautiful and comfortable, and the wife is wonderful to work with, but we would advise future guests to confirm every detail and cost upfront when booking tours or transportation. Our stay would have been much more enjoyable had these misunderstandings been avoided.

"Stay for a congenial welcome."

Ushi and Avnish were warm and hospitable hosts who made our stay memorable. Avnish, an experienced traveler himself, enjoys taking guests on tours, while Ushi is attentive and thoughtful—she even upgraded us for the first two nights to a lovely top-storey room. This room was very comfortable, shared a terrace with another room, and offered a semi-private seating area. The absence of a TV in the rooms was refreshing, as it encouraged interaction with other guests and the hosts in the common room. My mother, who stayed for one night in the upgraded terrace room next to ours, was absolutely delighted by the charming four-poster bed, cozy hot water bottles for the spring chill, and a delicious breakfast. Ushi also provided generous dinners, more than we could eat! However, the upgraded room was needed on the third day, and we were moved to a middle-level room without an attached bathroom. This bathroom was actually the common one near the common room, and its proximity made privacy an issue when other guests were around. The slatted door didn’t help. The steep, narrow stairs could be challenging, and leaving the premises required staff to open the outer door from a side laneway, which felt inconvenient at times. The property was also difficult to locate, especially after dark, as the numbering system confused many taxi drivers. Dining options nearby were limited to small local eateries across a busy, dusty road. Finally, the internet connection was strongest in the middle-level common room, which could be inconvenient depending on where you were staying. Overall, the hospitality and charm made our stay enjoyable, but the shared bathroom arrangements, accessibility challenges, and location quirks are worth considering.

"Didn’t match the TA reviews or the Lonely Planet’s description"

We selected Master B&B based on Lonely Planet’s glowing recommendation of “spotless” bathrooms and its central location. Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of expectations. We were assigned the “Ganesh” room, where the bathroom was not clean and only a trickle of hot water came from the shower. The bed linens and towels were worn-out and threadbare. To make matters worse, construction work at a neighbouring property began around 3:00 a.m., disrupting our sleep. Before arriving, we had spoken with Ushi (the landlady) regarding transportation and agreed to rent her car and driver for three days at INR 2,000/day (plus parking charges). Unfortunately, the driver provided was uncooperative and nearly caused us to miss our 9:00 a.m. appointment at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He insisted he couldn’t enter the premises because of security restrictions, but when we personally approached the security staff, they verified our booking and instructed him to park inside. Additionally, no bills were provided for the car, driver, or other charges, even after payment. Disappointed with the overall experience, we cancelled our second stay at Master B&B and chose to stay elsewhere upon our return from Jaisalmer.

"Nicely scented room!"

The room was nicely decorated and had a very welcoming fragrance, which made for a pleasant stay. While the hot water supply in the bathroom was somewhat limited, the room itself was otherwise comfortable and well-kept. However, the overall layout of the guesthouse was a bit awkward, as the rooms were not all located together, and accessing the entrance required going around the back through a rather obscure passage.

"Third Time Unlucky"

I have stayed at Master three times, but after this experience, I would rather stay elsewhere. I booked a room with Avnish, but on arrival was given one without an en suite bathroom. The first night was miserable due to loud renovation or demolition work at the house next door that went on past 11 p.m., making it feel like we were in the middle of a construction site. The following night was just as bad, with dogs barking, loud music late into the night, and other guests making a racket at 5 a.m. Avnish is not a great host as he tends to talk more than listen, and I really missed Ushi’s gracious hospitality. The final straw was being charged for a cup of coffee I had requested before breakfast, even though we skipped breakfast entirely the next day with no credit given. When I complained, Avnish did not apologize and instead said the building noise wasn’t his fault. His solution was to offer a discount “next time,” which felt dismissive. This was a disappointing stay, and I won’t be returning.

"Not all it seems"

We stayed at this guesthouse after it was recommended by a friend of a friend. Our initial 3-night stay in Delhi was okay—not as fantastic as many reviews suggest, but fine enough that we rebooked the same room for our return trip and, unfortunately, paid in advance. Upon returning, we were given a much smaller, less comfortable room on the top floor. It was pouring rain, and going to the bathroom meant getting wet as there was no cover. The next morning, we tried to discuss the situation with Avnish, but after waiting for other guests to finish speaking with him, he simply left the room. We were told by a staff member that all rooms were the same price—despite the obvious downgrade—and no refund or adjustment was offered. It left us feeling like once they had our money, service no longer mattered. There were other disappointments too. During our first stay, we wanted to book the “Hidden Delhi” tour, but instead of organizing a group as several guests had requested, Avnish arranged separate drivers and itineraries for everyone, meaning none of us actually experienced the advertised tour and we all paid additional commissions through MPGH. Lastly, a serious concern: during our final nights, we left the door unlocked so staff could deliver dinner. The meal took unusually long to arrive, and later I discovered cash missing from inside my daypack, which was zipped inside another bag. While I can’t definitively prove the theft, I know it disappeared during our stay at MPGH. Overall, this stay left us deeply disappointed. My advice: do not pay in advance, be very clear about the room you’re booking, and be cautious with your belongings.

"Absolutely Perfect"

We were fortunate to stay at this beautiful guest house both at the beginning and the end of our trip to India, and it couldn’t have been a better choice. Avnish and Ushi are the perfect hosts—welcoming, kind, and incredibly supportive—providing a quiet, clean, and comfortable place to stay. Unfortunately, we had to cut our trip short due to the coronavirus situation, as Canadians were advised by our Prime Minister to return home immediately. With very little notice, Avnish and Ushi graciously accommodated us once again. Returning to their guest house during such a stressful time was a true comfort as we worked through changing flights and canceling plans. They were the calm in the storm, and we will be eternally grateful for their care and kindness. Once the world returns to normal, I wholeheartedly recommend this guest house to anyone traveling to India. It truly feels like a safe and welcoming home away from home. We can’t wait to return!

"Great place"

When you first arrive, you might wonder if you’re at the right place, as it simply looks like a house from the outside. However, once inside, you’ll find it to be traditional, clean, and comfortable. The staff are very friendly, and the food is good. My only complaint would be the noise outside, so be sure to bring ear plugs for a more restful night!
