"Amazing Salkantay Trek, But Overpaid Online"

We loved the 5-day Salkantay Trek and highly recommend it—but compare prices first! We booked through salkantay.org for $520 each, only to learn others paid $300, $250, or even $180 for essentially the same experience. Campsites and food were no different from cheaper tours. If possible, wait until you’re in Cusco—you can book for the next day at around $250 with a quality company.

"Andean Adventure Fell Short of Expectations"

My friend and I booked the “Andean Adventure” expecting a medium-sized group, but it ended up being just the two of us. Our airport transfers failed twice, and while we had English-speaking guides for most tours and the Inca Trail, many transfer staff spoke little to no English, making communication difficult. One tour guide didn’t speak English at all—we were only able to continue thanks to another group’s guide who took us in.

"Well-Organized Tour, But Unprofessional Guides"

My husband and I booked an 8-day tour with Inca Trail Reservations, including the 4-day Inca Trail Trek. The logistics and transfers were smooth, but the guides on the trek were unprofessional. After I slipped and fell near Dead Woman’s Pass in the rain and hail, they laughed instead of helping. I tore most of the cartilage in my knee yet still finished the trek—no thanks to them.

"Great Hike, Unsafe Return Trip"

The 4-day Inca Trail with Henry and Jimmy was fantastic—both guides were great, and the porters worked incredibly hard (tip them well!). However, the return bus ride to Cusco was dangerous. The driver was speeding, his speedometer was stuck at 0, and he often drifted into oncoming traffic on turns to avoid slowing down—nearly causing a head-on collision.

"Excellent Tour, But Double the Price"

The tour and our guide Miguel were fantastic, but it cost about $575—nearly double what other agencies charge ($170–$250) for the same Salkantay trek, sometimes with slightly better food. In the off-peak season, you can easily find much better deals by checking agencies in Cusco; it only takes a day. The small upgrades we had don’t justify the price difference, and it’s doubtful the extra cost benefits the staff.

"reat Tour, But Overpriced"

The tour itself was excellent, and our guide Miguel was outstanding. My main concern is the high cost—about $575, compared to $170–$250 from other Salkantay trek operators. While we had minor upgrades like a hotel on the last night, slightly better food, and an earlier return train, these don’t justify such a big price gap. It seems the company overcharges customers who book online before arriving in Cusco, where prices are much lower. Booking in Cusco a few days in advance is a smarter option. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely the extra money benefits the staff.

Inca Trail Reservations

Direct operator for Inca Trail and other Machu Picchu treks. Good for early permit reservations and English-speaking support.
