"Good view on the terrace"

The rooms were comfortable, but the food left much to be desired. While the dishes were visually appealing, the quality of the food was lacking. The salted soup was overly thick, the creams heavy, and the stuffed turkey was hard, dry, and the worst I have ever tasted. Overall, a comfortable stay, but the dining experience was disappointing.

"Mexico for Christmas"

We visited Mexico City for the holidays, drawn by its history and excellent food. The Gran Hotel, located in the Zócalo district, is absolutely stunning, and our arrival was made special with a rolled-out red carpet. The building itself is breathtaking, and our room attendant was exceptional—always keeping the room immaculate with plenty of towels. However, we noticed that service can be inconsistent. Our TV kept disconnecting, and although we were told someone would come immediately, we waited over an hour. Similarly, when I asked for a bottle of water to be replaced in the gym, no one ever came despite the manager’s assurance. Mexico City requires a lot of walking, and breaks in the room are important, so reliable service matters. While the hotel is beautiful and the room service excellent, some areas of attention and responsiveness could improve to match the luxury experience.

"Wonderful experience !!!"

We knew we wanted a historical “old Mexico” experience, and the Gran Hotel Ciudad de México did not disappoint! From check-in to check-out, everything was wonderful. The doormen—especially Abraham in his striking red uniform—were more than just welcoming; they greeted us with a smile every day and helped with luggage. The front desk staff, particularly Adrian and Cynthia, were incredibly helpful, whether it was answering questions, exchanging currency, or arranging transportation to the airport. The hotel’s interior is breathtaking—the stained glass ceiling is spectacular, and our first ride in the old elevator to our room was a memorable experience. We stayed in suite 204, which looked out over the square, allowing us to enjoy all the activity below. The air conditioning worked perfectly, and the electric fireplace added both warmth and a cozy ambiance. Noise was never an issue; at times we even opened the doors to soak in the lively atmosphere. Being on the same square as the presidential palace gave us a front-row seat to the evening flag-lowering ceremony, complete with all the pomp and pageantry of the soldiers. Breakfast on the covered but open-air terrace was amazing, with attentive service—Maria deserves a special mention. One of the most unique highlights was watching the falcons being trained, used to keep other birds from making a mess in the square. The hotel’s location is ideal, with easy walking access to major sights, taxis, or Ubers, and the vibrant square with its vendors and nearby Hop-On Hop-Off bus stops made exploring the city effortless. We truly loved our stay and wished we could have stayed longer. On our next visit to Mexico City, the Gran Hotel will be our top choice without hesitation!

"Weekend trip to friend’s wedding in Mexico City"

We had a great stay at the Gran Hotel. The staff at reception and bell service were very friendly and helpful. The rooftop terrace offers wonderful views of the main square, making it an ideal location for this part of Mexico City. The surrounding streets feel completely safe, with plenty of police and security present. The only downside was that room cleaning during the day was a bit slow.

The restaurant offers excellent food, a great view, and very good service. Special thanks to Charles, Alexander, and Mary, who were exceptionally attentive and kind throughout our visit, making the experience even more enjoyable.

"Yes, it really does look like that. Shortlist it!"

We stayed six nights at this grand, historic hotel and were truly impressed—it’s almost certainly one of the most visually stunning hotels you’ll ever visit. The architecture and old-world charm are unforgettable, and the rooms are huge, quiet, and well-equipped, with comfortable beds, plenty of space to unpack, and blackout curtains for a restful sleep. The bathrooms are large and functional, though I would have preferred a bathtub. The staff are friendly and helpful, especially during breakfast and dinner service on the Terraza, which offers excellent meals and breathtaking views. The lounge is lovely, with free snacks, though the coffee machine is underpowered and access can be tricky at times. The rooftop and terrace dining areas are wonderful, but remember to dress warmly if there’s a breeze, and be aware that accessibility for those with mobility issues is not obvious. Some quirks come with the hotel’s age: old elevators requiring staff escort, handrails leading to sharp corners, dimly lit steps, and some confusing door mechanisms. Wifi can be spotty, and TV controls may take a moment to figure out. Plaza Mayor Bar hours are inconsistent, so check before planning a visit. The location is excellent—right by the Zócalo with plenty of sightseeing opportunities—but traffic can be slow, and Metro travel isn’t ideal for tourists. Taxis can pick up directly from the hotel, while Uber pickups are nearby but a block away. Allow plenty of time to travel around the city, especially during rush hour. Overall, this “grand old lady” is aging gracefully. If you’re looking for charm, history, and a unique experience—and don’t mind a few quirks—this hotel is highly recommended for a splurge stay.

"ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL; OUT OF THIS WORLD."

This is a charming hotel with a superb rooftop terrace, where we enjoyed dinner twice during our three-night stay. Housekeeping was excellent, and the staff were friendly and generally efficient, making our stay very pleasant. There were a couple of minor irritations: access to the hotel was a bit difficult, as we had to carry our suitcases some distance along a pedestrian-only street and were not offered assistance on a steep staircase when leaving. Additionally, we were told to call “O” at reception for requests like ice, but the phone was never answered, requiring us to go to reception in person. Despite these small issues, we will certainly return and plan to book directly through the hotel’s website again, which made a sudden change in our plans very easy to manage. Overall, a delightful stay.
