"A Mind-Blowing Introduction to West African Cuisine"

My first experience with West African food was absolutely mind-blowing. The flavors were vibrant and unforgettable, leaving me eager to return and try their longer tasting menu. This place is a true little gem!

"Elegant West African Flavors with Room for Service Improvement"

Akoko offers excellent West African cuisine in a refined yet relaxed setting. The restaurant strikes a nice balance—classy without being stuffy—with its warm, rustic brown interiors and an impressive wall of wine bottles greeting guests at the entrance. The menu stays true to traditional West African dishes while delivering high-quality flavors. Standouts for me were the oyster dish, mackerel, and the jollof rice, though nearly all plates were above average. Pricing is very reasonable, especially for London standards. The wine list was thoughtfully curated, featuring a nice mix of African selections alongside classic old-world varieties. It was a pity the South African dessert wine was unavailable, as it would have been a unique treat. Service was generally attentive and informative, with drinks well-managed. However, there was a significant delay of about 45 minutes between the fish/starters and the meat courses. Some small service lapses occurred—my partner wasn’t offered a place for her handbag (unlike other tables), her drink order was forgotten initially, and drinks arrived without coasters, leaving the table wet. Despite these minor hiccups, I would still recommend Akoko for anyone wanting to explore fine West African cuisine in London.

"A Birthday to Remember – Exquisite Experience All Around"

My partner booked this restaurant for my birthday, and it turned out to be one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. From the moment we arrived, the staff were warm, welcoming, and incredibly attentive. I truly felt celebrated and well looked after. The food was nothing short of spectacular—each dish was a masterful blend of flavors that delighted our taste buds and took us on a sensory journey. The presentation and execution were flawless, making the entire meal feel like a special occasion in itself. Service was seamless, friendly, and perfectly paced, adding to the overall sense of harmony and care. If you’re looking to treat yourself or someone special, I wholeheartedly recommend this place. It’s not just a meal—it’s an experience. Superb!

"Disappointing Overcooked Beef Despite Impressive Flavors"

The food lived up to the high price tag overall, but I was quite disappointed to receive an overcooked end piece of beef instead of having it replaced. It was clear that all the other servings were juicy and perfectly cooked, which made this oversight stand out even more. On a brighter note, the carrot sauce and black sesame fudge were truly exceptional and memorable components of the meal.

"Intriguing African Flavors but Price and Service Fall Short"

This Michelin-starred restaurant offers an interesting take on African cuisine, though I’m not entirely convinced it justifies the £100+ price tag. I chose the shorter lunch tasting menu, which featured five very small dishes plus sweets. Some courses felt a bit underwhelming flavor-wise, and the red mullet served cold in the second course was a surprising misstep. However, the jollof rice and the beef with accompanying sauces stood out as the best and most enjoyable parts of the meal. The ambiance and interior were charming and thoughtfully designed, but the service felt somewhat rushed and lacked the polish one might expect from a Michelin-starred establishment.

"A Delightful West African Tasting Experience with a Relaxed Vibe"

The tasting menu was excellent—a real positive surprise and a fantastic way to explore new West African dishes. I highly recommend it. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. While the ox tongue wasn’t quite to my taste, the caviar and tatale were outstanding. My wife also thoroughly enjoyed the vegetarian tasting menu.

Akoko – Fitzrovia

West African fine dining. Vegetarian tasting menu available with advance request. Innovative and immersive.
