"Classic Madrid Café with a Tarnished Charm — Now Less Inviting (2025 Update)"
This café has long been a cherished Madrid institution, beautifully remodeled while still honoring the timeless ambiance and local vibe of the past. It was always a pleasure to sit at one of their cozy tables, enjoying great coffee, reading the newspaper, or chatting with friends. The wonderful tradition of old-timers gathering to play chess every morning added a unique charm that made this place feel like a true community hub. The food used to match the atmosphere — their ham and cheese sandwich, perfectly toasted with generous slices of quality cheese and ham, was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. Coffee was consistently great, as you’d expect from a classic Madrid café. Service was always friendly and correct. However, a 2025 update sees this café sadly slipping away from its roots. They now charge higher prices for sitting in the salon, strictly enforce reservations, and impose a frustrating one-hour limit for coffee and conversations. This new rule has effectively ended the relaxed, local feel and even put a stop to the beloved chess games, which was one of the café’s most charming traditions. With these changes and significantly increased prices, this place has lost much of the welcoming spirit that once made it a standout. I can no longer recommend it as a genuine local spot and would suggest exploring other cafés in Madrid that still embrace the old-style vibe.
"Stunning Setting, Underwhelming Soul"
This restaurant is undeniably beautiful—bathed in natural light, adorned with elegant décor, and housed in a historical building, it impresses at first glance. I visited for lunch with a reservation and was initially met with indifference at the reception, though my server later on was attentive and pleasant. I ordered the steak tartare, Russian salad with tuna, a croqueta, and a chocolate dessert. The standout was the Russian salad—surprisingly flavorful and well-executed. However, the rest of the meal didn’t quite live up to the setting. The ambiance felt sterile, more suited to business lunches than a soulful dining experience. I’m glad I visited for the aesthetics and a glimpse of what could be, but given the lack of warmth and the mismatch between the decor and the cuisine, I wouldn’t hurry back.
"Disappointing Service Despite Good Food"
Overall, this wasn’t the best dining experience. The food itself was good, but the service left much to be desired. The staff generally seemed uninterested and unenthusiastic, which affected the atmosphere. It felt like we only received better treatment—such as being served with the nicer plates—because we made an effort to engage in conversation with one of the waiters. While the meal was enjoyable, the lackluster service made the experience feel less welcoming than it should have been.
"Chic and Enjoyable Spot for a Relaxed Lunch"
This stylish venue offers a great dining experience with consistently good cuisine. We had the chance to try both the bar and the restaurant, and everything we ordered was excellent across the board. While it may not be a must-visit destination or serve anything particularly extraordinary, it’s definitely a solid choice for a pleasant and satisfying lunch in a well-designed setting.
"Fantastic Spot with Excellent Coffee and Service"
The coffee here is absolutely perfect, and the cheesecake is a must-try—delicious and memorable. They offer brunch, lunch, and dinner, and based on what we ordered, everything seems to be of top quality. The staff are amazing—friendly, attentive, and the service is impressively fast. Highly recommended for a satisfying and enjoyable experience! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
"Charming Place – Worth a Visit!"
Very nice overall! We had a great experience and would definitely recommend it. We arrived a bit too late to try the brunch, which was a pity—but we’d love to come back for it next time!
