"Pretty Average"

We chose this hotel for a one-night stop in Mexico City en route from SMdA to Cancun, attracted by its boutique size and central location. The check-in staff were welcoming and guided us to our room. As a member of SLH, the room was smaller and more basic than we expected and could use some TLC. Storage for luggage was limited, and there was a constant background noise, possibly from a generator. On the positive side, the room featured a well-stocked minibar, comfortable robes, a good shower, and nice toiletries. The building itself is beautiful, and the location near the historic center is fantastic. We dined in the main Mexican restaurant that evening, but it was disappointing. A very snooty front desk staff member made us feel unwelcome, and the food was only average. The wine selection was good and reasonably priced, and the wait staff were pleasant. Overall, while the hotel has charm and an excellent location, certain aspects—room size, noise, and restaurant experience—make it fall short of its potential.

"Beautiful, well located hotel"

This beautiful hotel in Centro offers a fabulous rooftop area serving drinks and snacks, providing a stylish escape with great city views. The rooms are on the smaller side and can be tight for two suitcases, but were perfectly adequate for our one-night stay. The service was excellent, with staff going above and beyond, including organizing an airport transfer for us, which we greatly appreciated. Food and beverages were of high quality, making for a very enjoyable experience overall.

"Exceptional"

This spot is a true gem in the center of Mexico City. The tacos are exceptional—easily the best NY-style tacos I’ve ever tasted. Both the food and the service were excellent, making it a place worth returning to. A real discovery for anyone exploring the city!

"Amazing place to stay in the historic heart of Mexico City."

This hotel, set in a beautiful historic building, features spacious rooms and suites with thoughtful design touches. The stunning courtyard provides privacy and a cozy breakfast area, while the rooftop bar and pool—small but stylish—offer a perfect escape from the bustling city below. I highly recommend booking one of the suites, as they include a window and a small balcony overlooking the historic street, providing more natural light compared to rooms facing the courtyard. The lighting throughout the hotel is stylishly designed but could benefit from a few adjustments, especially for tasks like unpacking luggage. The staff were exceptionally friendly and responsive—communicating via WhatsApp made requests easy and efficient. Breakfast was delicious, with highlights including the fresh granola and grapefruit juice. The ground-floor restaurant was also very good. Overall, it’s a super nice place to stay, combining style, comfort, and excellent service in a prime historic location.

"A unique gem, but comically dark"

This hotel enjoys a fantastic location in Centro, surrounded by must-visit sites, museums, and a variety of restaurants and bars—from upscale to casual, low-key spots. The heritage building itself is stunning, with thoughtful design touches, and the quiet rooftop pool is a real highlight for the area. The staff were friendly and helpful—especially Paula, who assisted us with calls and reservations, which we greatly appreciated. The included breakfast was delicious, fresh, and served until late morning, and we often found ourselves enjoying it rather than venturing out. However, the rooms were extremely dark, which impacted our comfort. The only “windows” were part of the front door, with blackout shades that could only be fully open or closed. When open, they faced a walkway and offered little privacy. The high ceilings added to the spacious feel, but with almost no natural light or air circulation, the room felt a bit like a concrete silo. The lighting options were very limited, making it difficult to do simple tasks like putting on makeup or packing. After requesting extra lighting, we were eventually given a construction work light. Even the stairways and elevators were very dark, requiring careful navigation. Overall, we enjoyed the stay, particularly the service and rooftop pool, but the severe lack of lighting would discourage us from booking this hotel again.

"Beautiful, well run hotel with some major drawbacks"

Our experience at Downtown Mexico closely mirrors Joshua F’s March 2024 review. We were fortunate to have a “city view” room with a balcony overlooking the street and doors onto the courtyard. The balcony doors brought in light and air, which helped during a heatwave, as the high ceilings (at least 12 feet) made the air conditioning struggle to cool the room. The balcony also allowed us to close the courtyard windows for privacy. Despite these positives, the room’s darkness was a challenge. The dim lighting—four stylish lamps, a headboard strip, and a bathroom mirror bar—was too weak for tasks like putting on makeup or finding items in a suitcase. The hotel has a lively, hip atmosphere. During our stay, a private rooftop pool party played music until 1:30 a.m. Fortunately, the rooms are relatively soundproof when all doors and windows are closed, though this made the room quite warm. On the positive side, the staff were lovely—Sergio was especially wonderful. Breakfast was very good, with fresh fruit and a pleasant courtyard setting. The rooftop bar was a highlight for evening cocktails and snacks, and the pool was a great way to cool off. The ground-floor restaurant, Azul Historica, is stunning and offers excellent food, though it is not operated by the hotel. Overall, while the location, style, and staff are excellent, the lighting and air conditioning issues make it difficult to fully enjoy the rooms. For these reasons, we are unlikely to return or recommend it to others, despite its many appealing features.
