"Rude service. Outdated. Good location."
I stayed at this hotel for one night before returning home to Los Angeles after a trip to Spain, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. I rarely write negative reviews, but I feel compelled to share this one. At check-in, the staff were curt, and the overall welcome was unfriendly. There was a table with champagne on ice and glasses, and since no one had offered me a welcome drink during either of my visits to reception (once before my room was ready and again at 3pm when it was), I poured myself a glass before heading upstairs. To my surprise, a concierge staff member stopped me at the elevator and rudely remarked, “That is for a welcome drink for guests and is not intended as a minibar where you go back to continually refill.” I had only poured a single glass, yet I was made to feel as if I had done something wrong. It came across as presumptive and offensive, especially since I was simply a tired traveler looking casual after a long wedding trip. The manager later called to offer me more champagne, but the gesture felt hollow—I declined, as it did nothing to undo the poor first impression. Beyond that, the rooms are outdated, with a style that feels stuck in the late 80s. The overall atmosphere of the hotel is cold and impersonal. While the location is good, I would recommend spending a bit more at Hotel Alma nearby. I had a meal in their courtyard looking just as weary, and they treated me with warmth and respect—an experience this hotel unfortunately failed to provide.
"Lovely hotel full of character"
We had a truly enjoyable stay at this hotel. From the moment we arrived, the front desk and concierge were incredibly helpful, ensuring everything was taken care of seamlessly. The property itself is immaculately clean, tastefully decorated, and filled with unique artefacts that give it extra charm and character. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed, with thoughtful touches such as a fully stocked minibar (included in the rate), turndown service with chocolates, quality toiletries, and a cozy bathtub with pristine towels, bathrobes, and slippers. The bed was very comfortable, with several pillow options available. Room service on our first night was delicious, with plenty of variety to choose from. Although we visited in winter and didn’t use the pool, we did enjoy dinner on the terrace, which was lovely. The hotel also offered spa promotions, though we didn’t take advantage of them. The location is outstanding—just a short walk to La Pedrera and Sagrada Familia, with plenty of great restaurants nearby. We especially recommend Melrose Café and Berry Brunch for a fantastic meal. The only downside was the hotel breakfast, which at €36 per person felt overpriced. Otherwise, everything about our stay was excellent, and we would happily return.
"Great location but 5-star service? not sure."
Barcelona was interesting as always, but the city no longer feels as welcoming as it did 30 years ago—it almost seems to have traded its hospitality for a vibe closer to Paris. For a city now notorious for “water-gunning” tourists, I probably should have adjusted my expectations. This hotel was one of the most expensive I’ve booked, over USD 500 per night, yet it fell short of a true five-star experience. After four nights, I found myself wishing we had checked out earlier. Some front desk staff were grumpy and stingy with their smiles. Check-in was underwhelming, with no explanation of Hilton Honors benefits, and my daughter’s extra bed—just a sofa, not a sofa bed—was charged €99 per night, plus two additional city taxes. Breakfast was acceptable, with limited selection, but the staff were attentive. The pool closed at 8 p.m., too early for evening use after sightseeing, and the rooftop gym, without AC, was far too hot to be usable during the day. While the hotel’s location is excellent, the unfriendly front desk and lack of thoughtful service made the stay less enjoyable. If I return to Barcelona, I will not stay here again, which is why I’ve given a four-star review.
"Not a true 5 star experience"
Our stay at this hotel fell short of expectations for a five-star luxury property. First, we were only able to check in 30 minutes early, despite multiple early checkouts occurring that morning. While early check-in is never guaranteed, most luxury hotels would either accommodate it or set the proper expectation. Instead, we were told our room would be ready soon after checkouts began, yet there was no update as we watched several rooms being vacated. Second, the overpowering fragrance throughout the property—from the lobby to the room—was uncomfortable and felt artificial, almost as if masking another odor. Lastly, the room and bedding were extremely small and uncomfortable, not meeting the standards of other Small Luxury Hotels I have stayed at worldwide. While the location is excellent, the property itself felt closer to a three- or four-star hotel rather than a true five-star experience.
"Good central address"
This hotel easily meets five-star standards in Spain. The lobby is elegant and features a small, original museum, while the reception staff are efficient and professional. Our room was well-equipped, simple but comfortable, with no unnecessary frills. Breakfast was very good, and although I usually worry about basement rooms, ours was large, well-designed, and very comfortable. Overall, the service throughout the hotel was excellent, making for a very pleasant stay.
"Disappointed"
I was very disappointed with this five-star hotel. The room was not what I expected, featuring a strange, overly busy decoration. The internet failed twice within just 30 minutes while I was working, which was frustrating. Breakfast was also poor—there was very little in the buffet, and most items had to be requested à la carte, such as different types of bread, which should normally be available. On the positive side, the cleaning service was excellent, and the staff were consistently kind and helpful during my stay. The hotel restaurant, La Terraza, was a definite highlight, offering great food and stunning views. Overall, while there were some pleasant aspects, the room, breakfast, and internet issues left the stay feeling below the standard expected of a five-star property.
"Mixed experience – come for the glamour not the comfort"
The highlight of this hotel is undoubtedly the beautiful roof terrace. The pool is surprisingly large for a city-center property, with towels provided and poolside bar service. Note, there is no shallow area for smaller children, so this hotel feels more suited for adults. I dined on the rooftop terrace and enjoyed the lovely food, although it may not be ideal for families with young children. The staff were pleasant, though not especially welcoming—possibly because I had a toddler with me. Our room was reasonably spacious, but the bed was a small double and quite firm. We stayed directly beneath the rooftop terrace, so early morning and late evening noises from chairs above were noticeable. Some thoughtful touches included complimentary daily water, a single chocolate with the blinds closed, slippers, a robe, and electronic blackout blinds that made the room very dark. The in-room coffee machine was appreciated, though there were only two coffee capsules provided. The location is excellent and felt safe for solo walks. We easily walked to Sagrada Familia and even down to the beach, though the latter is quite a trek in the heat. Overall, I would recommend this hotel for couples. Paying slightly more for a better room ensures a good night’s sleep while still enjoying the fabulous rooftop terrace and pool. The ground-floor staff were very helpful, adding to the overall positive experience.
"5 Nights in Hotel Claris"
The hotel was very nice, and the restaurant on the top floor was one of the best meals we had during our five-night stay—delicious food with a great atmosphere. However, the beds were far too hard, and we didn’t get a single good night’s sleep, which significantly affected our overall experience.
"Room flooded, no real gym or sauna. very basic hotel"
My experience at this hotel was very disappointing. The room flooded during my stay, and the hotel offered no real support or assistance in resolving the issue. The facilities were also lacking—there was no proper gym or sauna, and overall the hotel felt very basic for the price being charged. On top of that, the booking process was misleading. You cannot book a room for three people upfront; instead, the hotel only adds the third person after the reservation is made, attaching high additional fees. This felt unfair and unnecessarily expensive. The only positive was breakfast, which was enjoyable and well-prepared. Unfortunately, this alone does not justify the high cost or make up for the poor service and lack of amenities.
"Very nice luxury hotel and very well located."
This is a very nice hotel with beautiful décor and a warm, impeccable welcome. The staff were attentive and genuinely caring, making our stay very comfortable. Our room and bathroom were both spacious and modern, and the entire property was peaceful and quiet, perfect for relaxation. Having parking directly under the hotel was extremely convenient, and overall everything exceeded our expectations. We honestly don’t understand the negative reviews others have mentioned, as our experience was nothing but positive. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for comfort, elegance, and excellent service.
"Good but too loud"
The hotel is very well located, and overall the services live up to a five-star standard. However, there are some details that detract from the experience. In particular, the constant noise from housekeeping in the hallways—trolleys clattering and loud conversations—starts as early as 7:30 a.m. and can be quite disruptive. While the hotel excels in service and amenities, light sleepers may find this early morning noise an issue.
"Renovations may be disruptive."
The hotel itself is beautifully designed and perfectly located, making it highly recommendable. We stayed in a slightly larger, newly renovated interior room, which was very nice. My wife needed to work, and I was hoping for a nap, but the ongoing renovations posed a challenge. If you get a room next to construction, plan your time around the workers or bring good headphones. After relocating to a quieter, smaller street-side room, it remained calm until lunch, when pounding and hammering began, culminating in the high-pitched whine of a tile saw—making a peaceful siesta impossible. Thankfully, my wife’s meetings weren’t affected. Breakfast was a mixed experience. The lead waiter seemed unwilling to let others take orders and wasn’t efficient at taking them himself. I had to place my cappuccino order three times, though the other staff handled clearing and bussing exceptionally well. The food itself was good, though not outstanding; attentive service would have elevated the experience further. Despite these issues, I would still highly recommend this hotel for its stunning design and incredible location. Renovations are temporary, and the overall experience remains very positive.
