Isolina Taberna Peruana (Barranco)

"Underwhelming Experience and Poor Service"
From the start, the experience was disappointing. A strong draft inside the restaurant made the atmosphere uncomfortable and caused our food to go cold quickly. The waiter was unhelpful — when we asked about the difference between the small and large portions, he simply said the small was for one person and the large for sharing. In reality, the large portion was massive, and considering we had already ordered starters, better guidance would have been appreciated. As for the food, it was nothing remarkable. Overall, the service and ambiance fell short of expectations.
"Isolina: A Timeless Gem Showcasing Peruvian Flavors"
Located in the charming Barranco district, Isolina perfectly showcases why Peruvian cuisine is so unique. The restaurant itself feels like stepping back in time, with a beautiful vintage atmosphere that adds to the experience. The dishes and cocktails are absolutely delicious — I highly recommend the Ají de Gallina, one of the best I’ve ever had! Portions are generous: all dishes are available in sizes for one or two people, but even the two-person portions could easily serve three. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss their desserts — they’re just as indulgent and come in large portions. Price-wise, it’s reasonable for the quality and service — not cheap but certainly not overpriced. Be prepared for a wait, as they don’t take reservations and there’s often a line; I waited 40 minutes but would gladly do it again. Isolina is worth every moment and visit!
"🌟 Isolina Lima: A Flavorful Visit with Room to Shine 🌟"
I recently visited Isolina, one of Lima’s most iconic restaurants that I’d been eager to try for quite some time. With all the buzz surrounding it, my expectations were high. Overall, it was a solid experience, though I left feeling there’s still more magic this place could offer. The clear highlight of the meal was the escabeche – absolutely delicious! 🥘 Its rich, layered flavors exceeded my expectations and showcased why Isolina has earned such a strong reputation. However, the papa rellena fell a bit short. While it wasn’t bad, it lacked the depth and wow factor I was hoping for. I’d consider giving it another try on a future visit to see if it was just an off moment. Service was polite but somewhat mechanical. Our server was attentive enough, though there wasn’t much warmth or personal engagement. The host team also seemed a little detached, which was surprising as it wasn’t peak hours. While hospitality can vary, it slightly dampened the overall experience. That said, I’d definitely return. The escabeche alone makes it worth coming back, and I’m keen to explore more of the menu. Isolina clearly has a lot of potential, and I’m optimistic that future visits will bring the full, exceptional experience I’ve heard so much about.
"🌟 Isolina Barranco: Tradition, Flavor, and Heart in Every Bite 🌟"
Isolina in Barranco truly lives up to the hype—rich in tradition, bold in flavor, and full of warmth. I ordered the ceviche, and it was outstanding: ultra-fresh fish cured to perfection, paired with red onions, sweet potato, cancha (crispy corn), choclo (giant Peruvian corn), and a delightful bite of fried seafood on the side. Every element on the plate felt intentional and beautifully balanced. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, ideal for sharing hearty, classic dishes with friends or enjoying Barranco’s charming vibe over a memorable meal. Portions are generous, and the service strikes the perfect balance between attentiveness and ease. If you’re in Lima and craving authentic Peruvian home-style cooking with elevated execution, Isolina is a must-visit.
"🌟 Beautiful Setting, but Room for Improvement 🌟"
When we arrived, the front staff seemed disengaged—they continued their personal conversation while we stood waiting to be acknowledged. It wasn’t the best first impression. Thankfully, our server Francisco turned things around with excellent service. He took the time to explain the menu in detail and checked in on us regularly, which we appreciated. The menu offers a wide variety of authentic Peruvian dishes, and while the options are appealing, the food quality didn’t quite meet the expectations for a restaurant of this status and price point. The flavors lacked the refinement and creativity you’d hope for at this level. Additionally, while outdoor seating is available, it doesn’t carry the same inviting atmosphere as the indoor dining area. Enhancing the outdoor ambiance could make the experience much more cohesive. Overall, this restaurant has great potential but needs to improve in two key areas: the quality of the food and the attentiveness of the front staff.
"🌟 Good Atmosphere, Huge Portions, but Overhyped 🌟"
The atmosphere was nice, and the portions are very generous. If you’re dining as a couple, one dish to share is more than enough, so it’s probably better to go with a group. We ordered the clams, which weren’t supposed to be spicy, but when we asked about it, they came out overly spicy—so much so that it was hard to taste the clams at all. I can handle heat, but unfortunately, it overpowered the delicate flavor of the dish. After two starters, I was glad I hadn’t ordered a main course yet—there was no way I could have finished it. Given the long lines and hype, I had higher expectations. While it wasn’t bad, I’ve honestly had much better dinners in Lima, even just around the corner.
"🌟 Great Food, Disappointing Service 🌟"
We visited on April 8th around 6 PM. The restaurant was nearly empty, so we expected smooth service. While the food itself was very good, the service fell far short of what you’d expect from such a highly rated and popular spot. At first, things seemed fine when we placed our order (one starter and two mains). But then it got frustrating: one main dish arrived first, the starter came 10 minutes later, and the second main dish much later still. After that, we were largely ignored. Our drinks sat empty, and we had to repeatedly flag someone down for assistance. When we finally asked for the dessert menu, the waiter brought the bill instead, assuming we were finished. After correcting him and placing our dessert order, he crumpled the bill and left, returning later with the dessert. Once we finished, he didn’t check if we wanted anything else—just dropped the bill again. For a restaurant with such a reputation and waiting lists, I expected much better service. The food alone isn’t enough to make up for it, and sadly, I can’t recommend it.
"🌟 Delicious Food with Huge Portions! 🌟"
The food was absolutely delicious, but the portions were enormous—we couldn’t finish everything we ordered. Perfect for sharing, so come hungry or with a group!
"🌟 Disappointing Experience Despite a Good Starter 🌟"
The only dish that stood out was the chicken avocado appetizer, which was genuinely good. Unfortunately, their specialty main course was bland, and the drinks tasted like nothing more than sugar. While the portions are generous, the prices feel too high for the quality delivered. To make matters worse, the waiter’s rude attitude toward a foreign guest left a bad impression. I might have rated this place higher if the service had been more welcoming and the flavors more memorable.
"🌟 3.5/5 – Overhyped and Underwhelming 🌟"
I was unpleasantly surprised with the food at Isolina. After passing the Barranco location countless times and hearing all the hype, I expected much more from this trendy spot. The food was mediocre by Lima standards and quite pricey. Yes, the vibes are great and the location is a 10/10, but you can easily find much better food in Lima for a lot less. The ceviche lacked flavor, and despite Isolina’s focus on “authentic” Peruvian cuisine, that didn’t come through in the experience. On the bright side, the ají tiradito and maracuyá sour were both good. Still, overall I wouldn’t recommend it.
