"Great meal"
“We had an early dinner around 5:30, and I’m glad we made a reservation since it was already busy. Prices were very reasonable—dinner for two with wine came in under $100. The restaurant is in a lively area that’s fun to walk around before or after your meal.”
"Special night out"
“This was the one place we chose for a special dinner, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere, food, and service were all outstanding. My wife and I absolutely loved it—well worth it!”
"Yummy & reasonable!"
“Service and food were excellent! Our waiter was attentive and made sure all our needs were met. We dined upstairs, which was much quieter than downstairs—perfect for a more relaxed meal.”
"Old world charm"
**“This old-world restaurant is a must. The atmosphere is cozy yet lively, with a real NYC Italian vibe. The service has that classic old-school attitude from long-time staff, but once you laugh along, everything goes smoothly. I ordered the Chicken Marsala, which was spot on, while my partner had the Eggplant Parmigiana. The red sauce was a little on the sweet side, but I appreciated that it’s made in-house—trust me, this Italian knows his sauces. We also ordered a side of meatballs as a true test of the chef. They were clearly homemade, though a bit heavy on the basil for my taste. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back.”**
"Family Favorite"
“We love this little Italian neighborhood restaurant that has been around forever. We’ve been coming here since the 1980s and have never once been disappointed. The food is classic, good, and comforting Italian, served in a cozy, slightly old-fashioned atmosphere. The career waiters provide attentive service that adds to the charm. We visited last Saturday with a group of six, and everyone—yes, even the vegetarian—had a wonderful meal.”
"Chaotic Reservation Experience"
The food at this restaurant was authentic and delicious, and my gluten-free dietary needs were accommodated fairly well. The restaurant had a lively, fun atmosphere. However, the reservation system was quite confusing—despite having a reservation, we and several other guests ended up waiting outside for up to 40 minutes for our tables, which was frustrating, especially if you’re hungry.
"True italian atmosphere"
This restaurant offers a cozy, authentic Italian atmosphere, providing a nice retreat from the bustle of the street outside. The food is good, though portions are on the smaller side. It’s a quiet spot, perfect if you want a moment of calm while enjoying a genuine Italian dining experience.
"Meh"
My teen daughter and I visited hoping to try one of the city’s best chicken marsalas. Although the food itself was good, the restaurant felt unwelcoming, and the service was minimal at best. With the restaurant fairly empty during our reservation, we left feeling that the overall experience didn’t justify the effort of going out of our way, especially before a Broadway show. Not worth the hassle.
"Traditional Italian comfort food"
Stepping into Monte’s feels like a trip back in time, with a menu that seems unchanged for decades. I enjoyed the lasagna, and the cocktail menu felt delightfully retro. The staff was helpful and attentive, and the dining room offered a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere.
"Special historic neighborhood gem"
On a recent trip to NYC, Monte’s truly delivered a nostalgic dining experience reminiscent of the West Village restaurants of decades past, like Villa Mosconi and Rocco’s. Operating for over 105 years, Monte’s still shines with a warm, welcoming, and cozy atmosphere. Many patrons appeared to be neighborhood regulars, and the waitstaff seemed long-time fixtures, providing efficient and attentive service. We shared clams Oreganata, strozzapretti, shrimp Monte, veal saltimbocca, and finished with a zabaglione for dessert, accompanied by Italian house wine by the carafe and fresh bread. A timeless spot worth revisiting!
"Great Food"
I’ve been dining at Monte’s for over 25 years, and the food has consistently been excellent. On this visit, however, the service fell short—I had to ask twice for bread and twice for a spoon. By the time the bread arrived, I was already halfway through my entrée, which was frustrating. I’ll definitely return, but I’ll be keeping a closer eye on the server next time.
"Best Old World Italian in Manhattan … by far"
Monte’s and its staff are legends for a reason—not because of fleeting trends, but due to decades of consistently exceptional cuisine. If you want a taste of truly old-school Italian, Monte’s delivers in spades. The veal parm with capers easily ranks among my top five meals ever, while the appetizers and other entrees remain exquisitely authentic and true to their roots. This is the kind of classic Italian dining experience that social media-focused chefs attempt to imitate, only to fall short. Monte’s is the real deal—treat yourself.
"Authentic New York Restaurant"
This is a very authentic Italian restaurant right in the heart of Greenwich Village. While it wasn’t the best meal we had during our stay, it was still very enjoyable and reasonably priced. The service was excellent, the atmosphere inviting, and the desserts were outstanding—especially the tiramisu, which was simply amazing.
"Italian in NYC"
The food at this restaurant is incredible, and the staff make the experience even better. I tried the tortellini special with Bolognese sauce, and it was so good I wanted to savor every last bite. Highly recommend for anyone craving authentic Italian flavors.
"Very good choice."
A very solid choice for dining in New York City. The food is rich and flavorful, the prices are reasonable for the area, and the service is attentive and welcoming. Definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in the neighborhood.
