"A Scam – Unacceptable Customer Service and Lack of Responsibility"
Our experience with this train company was deeply disappointing. We booked a ticket from Brisbane to Cairns, but due to flooding, the journey was cut short and we were dropped off in Townsville. While we understand that natural events can disrupt travel, the company’s handling of the situation was unacceptable. When we requested compensation for the inconvenience, we were informed that no refund or alternative transport would be offered because a flood warning had been issued a week prior. The issue is that this warning was only displayed on their website’s homepage. When we booked our tickets, we were redirected directly to the booking page, where no such notice appeared. We were never made aware of any potential risks before completing our purchase. To make matters worse, the train was already delayed by four hours and only traveled as far as Mackay. From there, we were transferred to a bus that went to Townsville, still far from our intended destination in Cairns — and no onward travel arrangements were made. As a result, we had to cover additional expenses, including extra hotel nights, meals, and transport to reach Cairns, even though we had already prepaid for accommodation there. The complete lack of communication, accountability, and customer support from the company made this experience feel like a scam. At the very least, some form of compensation or assistance should have been provided.

I had a pleasant experience at the Cairns Railway booking office. The staff were friendly and provided excellent service, making it easy to book local tourist rides such as the Cairns to Kuranda Scenic Railway with a Skyrail return, or even longer trips like the Cairns to Brisbane route. The office is conveniently located next to the Cairns Railway Station, just behind the Cairns Central shopping centre. It’s air-conditioned and comfortable, and when it’s not busy, the staff are especially attentive and helpful. I’m looking forward to enjoying my upcoming Queensland train journey!
