Sala Lodges

"A must do in Siem Reap. 4 3/4 STARS"
Sala Lodges is an absolute must for anyone traveling to Siem Reap. The lodges are rustic and charming, yet equipped with all modern amenities. The hotel manager and owner are a delight, and we enjoyed several friendly conversations with him about the property. His and his wife’s vision and execution for Sala Lodges are impeccable. The staff is extremely friendly, and the service ranks among the best I’ve ever experienced. The daily breakfast juice, based on the “color of the day,” was both creative and delicious. While the restaurant prices are higher than elsewhere, the quality, service, and convenience make it well worth the extra cost. I would rate Sala Lodges at 4¾ stars. It falls just short of 5 stars due to occasional noise from neighbors at night and slightly firm pillows—which, after a 24-hour journey (including five flights) from Chicago, a softer pillow would have been welcomed. Bottom line: Sala Lodges is truly unique, wonderfully executed, and a stay not to be missed.
"Unforgettable!"
What can I say? Sala Lodges is a magical place that offers an extraordinary experience in Siem Reap. The lodges are both authentic and refined, set among lush gardens, with a beautiful swimming pool that provides the perfect rest after exploring the temples of Angkor. The welcome we received was exceptional, full of thoughtful touches that made our stay truly special. Arne, his wife, and their team are warm, attentive, and dedicated to ensuring that every detail contributes to an unforgettable stay—luxury without any unnecessary excess. From the very beginning, we were touched by their generosity. We had booked one lodge for two with an extra bed for our son, but to give us all more privacy, they offered us an additional lodge at no extra cost, simply because it was low season and they wanted to make our stay more comfortable. This level of kindness left us deeply grateful. Beyond the comfort of the lodges, we also organized our excursions through Sala Lodges. The process was smooth and thoughtful, tailored perfectly to our wishes thanks to their experience. We had the privilege of exploring with a remarkable Francophone guide, full of erudition, who made history and culture come alive. Our tuk-tuk driver waited for us with refreshing jasmine-scented towels after each temple visit—small gestures that made a big difference. In short, it was an unforgettable stay. I can only say Whao! and express my heartfelt gratitude: thank you, thank you, thank you to Arne, his wife, and the entire team for such an exceptional experience. —Jean-Christian
"Very good resort in Siem Reap"
My wife and I stayed for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The highlight was the restaurant, which serves excellent, high-quality food. The main area for improvement lies in service levels across the property. While the staff are young and motivated, they would benefit from additional training and guidance from senior management to elevate the overall guest experience.
"Unforgettable luxury and beauty – stay here!"
This was hands down the most beautiful hotel we experienced during our month-long vacation. Everything you’ve read about Sala Lodges is absolutely true! The “rooms” are authentic Cambodian traditional houses, lovingly restored and modernized for today’s traveler. Spacious, comfortable, and filled with thoughtful details—like daily treats on the bed, excellent reading lights, and a turndown service that transforms your mosquito-netted king bed into something magical. The shower was fantastic, and the dual air conditioners kept the room perfectly cool. Breakfast each morning was lavish and delicious, and dinner at the hotel was equally enjoyable. The pool is beautiful, though the warm Cambodian weather keeps the water from being fully refreshing—still a perfect place to relax. The outdoor bar and lounge looked inviting as well. We also arranged airport transfers and two days of guided Angkor Wat tours through the hotel. Our guide was superb, and we were very thankful for the air-conditioned vehicle after long days in the heat. The staff went above and beyond—booking dinners, securing tickets to an incredible circus show, and even offering tuk-tuk rides into town. If you can stay here, do it—you will treasure the experience for the rest of your life!
"Loud music"
This is a dream location just outside Siem Reap, featuring 11 beautifully rebuilt traditional Cambodian houses. The accommodations themselves are charming and provide a peaceful, authentic environment. Unfortunately, our experience was significantly impacted by the persistent thumping of incredibly loud music from 10 am to midnight each day, which made it difficult to fully enjoy the tranquil setting.
"Unique experience"
Once again, our time at Sala Lodges was truly wonderful. Everything was perfect, just as always. The team is incredibly friendly and professional, and the villa was simply amazing. A heartfelt thank you to the fantastic managers, Arne and Simone, for their warm and genuine welcome. We will definitely be back!
"Step into the past of an Old Cambodian house"
Our experience began with a warm airport pickup by Harrier, complete with cold water and refreshing towels—a thoughtful start after a long journey. The resort itself is tucked away from the busy street, with a simple yet welcoming lobby and exceptionally friendly staff. Guests should be prepared for a return to old Cambodian living, as the rooms feature clean, quaint houses without TVs, combining simplicity with modern style. The following morning, we received a thoughtfully prepared picnic basket for our trip to Angkor Wat, adding to the unique experience. I highly recommend this resort for anyone seeking a different ambiance paired with attentive and personalized service.
"Great place, really. HOWEVER…"
This place truly captures everything you want your trip to Cambodia to be. The rooms are spacious, the bathrooms excellent, the pool inviting, and the overall ambience beautifully blends local authenticity with a touch of modern comfort. Nights bring the natural soundtrack of frogs and crickets, adding to the charm. That said, the experience comes with trade-offs. The wooden walls are very thin, and you are right in the middle of everyday local life in Siem Reap — from music and neighborhood activities to weekend celebrations nearby. The service is genuinely good, but like many upscale hotels in Cambodia, the food is overpriced for what it is. Taking a tuk-tuk for just a couple of dollars will get you to fantastic local restaurants with better food and atmosphere at a fraction of the cost. Overall, it’s a unique and memorable stay — just be prepared for the lively surroundings and consider venturing out for meals.
"Nice place to relax"
This morning, my wife and I departed Sala Lodges after a wonderful four-night stay. The lodges are beautifully crafted authentic Cambodian wooden houses on stilts, complete with mosquito nets and earplugs for a comfortable night’s sleep. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the breakfast offered each morning was excellent. After long days exploring the Angkor temples around Siem Reap, the swimming pool provided a perfect place to relax and unwind. Sala Lodges offers a peaceful and authentic Cambodian experience with thoughtful touches throughout.
"Propagates itself as a place for the posh traveler but missed the mark"
Normally, I prefer not to leave a review at all rather than write a negative one, but I feel it’s necessary in this case. My boyfriend and I moved from a nearby hotel to join my sister and her boyfriend for one night at Sala Lodges. Unfortunately, we were all disappointed. The property cost nearly four times as much as our previous hotel, yet the service and amenities fell short. Upon arrival, one of our air conditioners was leaking. The staff came immediately to fix it, which was appreciated. However, housekeeping later switched it off during turn-down service, and it would not restart. Since hotel staff leave around 11pm, there was little help beyond the night guard logging a request for the next day. My sister’s AC leaked throughout the night, leaving a puddle in her room. When we mentioned this to the owner at breakfast, his response was dismissive — “yes, I heard, they are fixing it now” — with no apology or concern. It felt like feedback was only welcome if positive. That said, the lodges themselves are beautiful, authentic, and uniquely decorated — a highlight for those seeking a different kind of stay. Still, they may not suit everyone: the bathrooms have no AC, windows remain partially open, and mosquitoes do make their way in (thankfully, nets are provided). Other positives included a lovely, clean pool at a good temperature, a solid breakfast, and efficient laundry/shoe-shine service. Negatives included limited English communication with staff, which made even simple requests challenging, and construction noise nearby as of June 2018. TL;DR: The traditional lodges are unique and atmospheric, but given the high price, underwhelming service, and management’s lack of care, it felt like poor value compared to other options in Siem Reap.
