"Pretty Nice Hotel, but Overpriced"

We stayed at SUMAQ Machu Picchu Hotel for one night during a month-long trip through South America (@wolfestreettravel on Instagram and wolfestreettravel.com). It’s definitely one of the nicer hotels in Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu Pueblo, but in our opinion, significantly overpriced. The hotel’s design and finish felt more like a 3- to 4-star European hotel rather than a true 5-star experience. It lacked character and seemed to cater primarily to tour groups, which was evident as dinner was included in our price and we had to schedule our meal before or after large group dinners that occupied most of the dining room. Not a major issue, but worth noting how tour groups dominate the hotel’s business. The breakfast was one of the least impressive we encountered on our trip, consistent with the 3- to 4-star feel rather than the luxury expected at this price point. The selection was limited, baked goods weren’t fresh, and there was no option to order espresso or lattes—just brewed coffee from carafes on the buffet. On the positive side, the service was excellent, and we appreciated being checked in early.

"Dark Rooms, Train Noise, and Cramped Bathroom – Not Worth It"

This hotel was a major disappointment. While the lobby is nice, the rooms are dimly lit, creating a gloomy, cave-like atmosphere that isn’t relaxing. The biggest issue is the train tracks right outside the window — you can see them clearly and hear trains passing frequently and loudly. The noise and vibrations disturbed my sleep, especially as a light sleeper. Additionally, the bathroom was extremely cramped, with barely enough room to move. If you want a peaceful stay, this isn’t the place.

"A Relax stay in Machupichu Pueblo"

Sumaq went above and beyond — all the staff were exceptionally friendly, polite, and helpful. The hotel is beautiful with a very relaxing ambiance. Its location is very convenient, close to the main plaza of Aguas Calientes and within walking distance to the train station. The hotel offers many activities for both kids and adults. The buffet breakfast was delicious. Special thanks to Milagros, Edgar, and Josimar for their outstanding service. If we ever return, we will definitely stay here again. Thank you all for your warm hospitality!

"Gorgeous Stay in the heart of Aguas Clientes"

The hotel is incredibly close to Machu Picchu—you can even see the mountains from your room. The staff, especially Johnny, were extremely helpful. We had a small Arac Masin ceremony to celebrate our anniversary, which was truly special. The shaman, decorations, traditional clothing, and flowers were all perfectly arranged. The food throughout our stay was delicious! The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was due to an accounting issue where we were double charged an excessive amount for prepaid activities. We had to spend a lot of time with the concierge sorting out what turned out to be a paperwork error. They eventually resolved it, but it did put a slight damper on our experience.

"Disappointment!"

The hotel offers good quality services, but the major drawback is the lack of air conditioning in the rooms—an absolute absurdity! Despite charging high rates, this hotel doesn’t provide air conditioning. After years of traveling and staying in good hotels, I’ve never encountered this before. I definitely would not return, nor would I recommend it to anyone. It was a disappointing night, passing through the heat while paying a very high price!

"SUMAQ – Yes!👍"

SUMAQ: Fantastic staff, especially George, who impressed us as both a Peruvian wine enthusiast and a top-notch service professional. The hotel is ideally located for easy access to Machu Picchu. Our room was lovely with a great view. There was minimal noise at night, and although we had a small issue getting the TV to work, we hardly had time to watch it anyway. Definitely a place to stay if you can!

"Restaurant has very tasty local cuisine"

Nice boutique hotel, ideal for short trips to Machu Picchu. The restaurant offers great and flavorful local cuisine, and breakfast was good. The rooms and bathrooms are functional but somewhat outdated and could benefit from an upgrade. The train noise was minimal to non-existent, despite other guests’ complaints.

"Mixed review"

I visited Machu Picchu toward the end of December 2023 and absolutely loved the town! The ruins are breathtaking, and the town itself was lively and welcoming. The hotel made a strong first impression and seemed to be one of the best in the area, but here’s a breakdown of my experience: Pros: Beautiful rooms, stylish reception, hotel bar, and excellent amenities The food, cocktails, and wine list at the restaurant were outstanding Smooth bag transfer from the train to the hotel — we went straight from the train to the ruins, and afterward, our bags were waiting for us in the hotel lobby Cons: No air conditioning in the rooms and too many mosquitoes to open the windows comfortably Bartender repeatedly asked for cash tips rather than including them on the card, which felt a bit pushy Reception and room cleaning staff were unresponsive when called Our room (1207) was very noisy, shaking each time a train passed, which was often Whenever presented with a check or receipt, staff hovered and pressured us to sign immediately without time to review, which was uncomfortable Overall, while this hotel seemed to be the best option in the area, I wouldn’t rate it a full 5 stars based on my experience. I look forward to exploring other options on my next visit.

"Nice hotel but…"

The hotel itself is very beautiful, but the massage service I received was disappointingly basic. For the hotel’s benefit, I would suggest discontinuing this service, as it detracts from the overall quality and reputation of the property. It’s hard to understand why the hotel would risk its good name for such a minimal return.

"Super at Sumaq"

Nice hotel in Machu Picchu, away from the crowds. The on-site restaurant is good, and the service was excellent. They even surprised my wife with a beautiful birthday treat in our room, which was very thoughtful.

"Nice hotel with good service"

A nice, luxurious hotel situated at the foot of Machu Picchu. The staff and service are exceptional—special thanks to George! The food was very good. The only downside was that the premises felt a bit cold and lacking warmth.

"Too many stars for so little hotel"

The hotel’s location is excellent, facing the river with magnificent views — these are really the only positives. However, there are several significant drawbacks. The street outside is unpaved, so entering and leaving the building means getting dirty with mud. The mattresses on the beds are worn and deformed, making sleep quite uncomfortable. The elevator carpets have an unpleasant smell, and the breakfast quality is poor. Getting into the bathtub is quite difficult due to the lack of a proper shower tray — there are two steps and a screen, which can be dangerous, especially for older guests. I’m not familiar with the other hotels in Aguas Calientes, but in my opinion, Hotel SUMAQ feels like it has two stars too many.
