The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui

"Stunning Property but Lacks Cohesion and Value"
The Ritz-Carlton Samui is a visually stunning and impeccably maintained resort, offering spacious, modern rooms that live up to the expectations of a luxury five-star property. I highly recommend booking an ocean view room, as it significantly enhances the experience compared to the resort-facing options. The grounds are pristine, but the estate feels quite spread out, with key areas such as the bar, reception, and restaurants feeling somewhat disconnected. This layout made moving around less fluid and relaxing compared to other island resorts. The staff were warm, attentive, and professional, consistently delivering excellent service. However, some unexpected oversights—like hair dye residue in the shower and a non-functioning air conditioner in the lounge area—detracted from the overall experience. While the check-in team acknowledged our pre-wedding honeymoon, the promised special touches never materialized, which was disappointing. Another drawback was the dining prices, which felt excessively high compared to other five-star properties on Koh Samui and the local market, making meals feel poor value despite their quality. Overall, while the Ritz-Carlton Samui impresses with its breathtaking surroundings and exceptional staff, the dispersed layout, small service lapses, and steep food costs mean it doesn’t fully deliver the complete five-star experience.
"As beautiful as it is dishonest"
The hotel itself is very nice, with comfortable rooms and helpful, friendly staff—especially the girls at the kids’ club who were fantastic throughout our stay. The property has all the amenities you would expect from a five-star resort, and the service from most staff members was excellent. Unfortunately, the management left much to be desired. During our four-night stay, there were issues with our room not being properly prepared for two nights, despite reminders. The most concerning problem, however, was with billing for dinners. When booking through the hotel website, it was explicitly stated that dinners were included in our package. At check-in, the staff even confirmed this, and during dinner, the restaurant staff clearly indicated what was included. Yet at checkout, we were unfairly charged for meals. After several discussions, the hotel only offered to discount one dinner as a “solution,” which felt unsatisfactory and misleading. While we appreciated the dedication and friendliness of the general staff, these management issues significantly affected our experience. I am unsure if we would return due to these concerns.
"Lovely hotel, a truly great stay. Restaurants pricy."
My wife and I stayed here for 11 nights with our two boys (12 and 15), and we were thoroughly impressed. The hotel sits on expansive grounds, and our bedrooms were possibly the nicest we’ve ever stayed in, surpassing even other five-star properties we’ve visited. The property is vast, but the hotel provides numerous staff in golf buggies to transport guests around the grounds, making it easy to navigate without long walks. The pool area was lovely and well-maintained, though the beach itself was less appealing due to rocky terrain and hard sand. Our only hesitation in awarding a full five stars was the cost of dining on-site. With four or five restaurants covering Thai, steak, Indian, and more, the meals were priced 5–6 times higher than local restaurants just 1.4 km away—about a five-minute cab ride. While the quality was good, it was difficult to justify spending £200 for dinner when excellent local options were so affordable. Transportation to town was easy and convenient, with Bolt or Grab available almost immediately—never more than a two-minute wait. Overall, the hotel offers outstanding accommodation and service, but plan to budget carefully for on-site dining.
"Good in parts"
We stayed in a suite, which was fantastic—spacious, with comfortable beds and a powerful shower. The room cleaning was excellent, and the staff were incredibly helpful, especially when one of
"Beautiful"
We enjoyed a wonderful stay at this beautiful hotel, with stunning rooms and a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. The staff were warm, attentive, and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable, truly reflecting the Ritz-Carlton standard of hospitality. However, the resort’s remote location and very limited lunch options left something to be desired. During our stay, the only choices were in-room dining or the poolside restaurant, with other outlets not opening until 6 pm. The pool itself was somewhat murky, which made sitting there for meals less appealing. When paying over $1,000 per night, it would be great to have more variety—such as a lounge or terrace bar offering afternoon cocktails, light bites, or live music. While the hotel excels in comfort and service, expanding the daytime dining and beverage options would significantly enhance the overall experience.
"Really disappointing I won’t return"
Our stay at the hotel was a mix of positives and disappointments. The suite we stayed in was quite nice, and the staff were genuinely lovely and attentive. However, the hotel offers very little to do on-site. The much-hyped fire show felt unsafe—burning poles were waved dangerously close to guests, and the strong smell of paraffin made dinner unpleasant. Management needs to address a key issue: English proficiency among staff. Most team members had difficulty communicating, which caused unnecessary frustration when requesting services. For a property carrying the Ritz-Carlton name and charging premium rates, this gap in service was particularly noticeable. While the grounds and accommodations are appealing, better-trained staff and safer, more thoughtful entertainment would significantly improve the guest experience.
"Great stay, minor points"
We spent 10 days at this resort and had an absolutely brilliant experience. Our room was fabulous, with a connecting balcony to our children’s room, offering stunning views. The pool was lovely, and the included spa massage was a real treat. Breakfast was excellent, though the open-style room could get quite warm. All the staff were incredibly friendly, polite, and helpful. The appreciation hour with free cocktails, beer, wine, and canapés from 5:30–6:30 pm was a delightful touch and created a lovely social atmosphere. There were a few minor service hiccups: water and towels were sometimes not replaced, coffee orders forgotten at breakfast, repeated calls for an iron, and kayaking bookings unavailable on arrival. Fortunately, these were all quickly resolved when mentioned. The resort is extensive, and travel between areas often requires waiting for the buggy. Its remote location means taxis are needed to reach Chaweng or Fisherman’s Village, which may be inconvenient for some but appealing for those seeking privacy. Finally, the hotel’s restaurants offer good-quality food but at very high prices compared to local options, which made dining out more attractive and affected the atmosphere in the hotel venues.
"A beautiful hotel but the beach & sea are a disappointment"
Our welcome at the Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui was warm and inviting, though the sheer amount of information given at check-in made it difficult to retain details about restaurants and amenities. Our room was spacious and comfortable, but guests should note the multiple stairs—so check before booking, and always specify a sea view if that’s important. Housekeeping was excellent every day, and we appreciated their consistent attention. We had been traveling for nearly two months and planned to relax fully here. Most of our meals were at the hotel, and while prices were high, the quality of the food and the service from all staff was first-class. Breakfast was less enjoyable during the first few days, as many corporate guests on laptops and phones disrupted the otherwise luxury atmosphere. The major disappointment was the beach. Despite specifying our interest in swimming, snorkeling, and beach time, the beachfront alongside the restaurant was strewn with litter, and the sea had floating debris. While management responded positively with a complimentary meal, the presence of sunbeds and bean bags on the beach creates a misleading impression that it is private and maintained. Unfortunately, we didn’t swim in the sea even once during our stay. On the positive side, the spa massage was fantastic, and the staff were amazing throughout. While the hotel excels in service and dining, the beach conditions make it difficult to recommend as a true beach holiday destination.
"A lovely experience"
This resort is truly lovely, with beautiful rooms, fantastic staff, excellent restaurants and bars, and a great location for exploring nearby activities. The spa is very reasonably priced, adding to the overall appeal. A few practical points to note: the resort is vast and quite hilly, so rooms located higher up require using the buggy service. We changed our room for an additional cost, but the staff handled it seamlessly, placing us centrally near the bars, restaurants, and pool—making our stay much more convenient. For improvement, the resort could offer more on-site entertainment beyond the fire show and Thai festival, which would enhance the experience for guests spending more time on the property. The only significant drawback we encountered is the lack of a clear and enforced smoking policy. Smoking around the pools and bars was an issue, and while the staff are incredibly polite and helpful, the Thai culture’s non-confrontational nature makes it difficult for them to address this. Management should consider implementing a firm policy to ensure all guests can enjoy the resort comfortably.
"Nice but not luxurious"
We stayed in an Ultimate Pool Villa for eight nights in January and, unfortunately, our experience was disappointing from the start. Despite booking a private airport transfer, there was no one to greet us upon arrival. Our driver had to guide us up the stairs and provide luggage tags—no welcome drink or warm greeting was offered. Unlike other luxury hotels that allow guests to use rooms or spa facilities when arriving early, this property had no process in place. We were initially directed to a breakfast area to wait, which was uncomfortable and not air-conditioned. Only after requesting a more suitable space were we escorted to a conference room with seating and air conditioning—a far from ideal start to our holiday. While the staff were generally friendly, service felt unpolished and the resort appeared understaffed at times. The villa itself was reasonably comfortable but did not feel luxurious and lacked modern conveniences, such as a smart TV. The plunge pool was small, limiting its appeal. Despite these shortcomings, the property is in a stunning location, and our stay was made enjoyable thanks to the kindness of certain staff members, particularly Mayom at breakfast and the housekeeping team. However, overall, our experience at Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui fell short compared to our previous stays at Ritz Langkawi and Ritz Bangkok.
