"Happy new year"

Our stay was simply fantastic in every way. The hotel’s central location is perfect, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and ready to assist with any request. The quality of the dining was excellent, both at breakfast and dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 wonderful days and would highly recommend this hotel.

"Family Christmas Trip"

We ended our six-day family road trip from Richmond to NYC with a two-night stay at The Whitby, and it completely exceeded our expectations. While we were familiar with Firmdale properties, The Whitby truly impressed us—they anticipated our arrival, knew our names, and welcomed our family of ten like old friends. The rooms were exceptional, and the staff went above and beyond in every way. If you’re on the fence about staying here, hands down it’s the best hotel we’ve experienced in NYC—and we’ve stayed at many. Thank you for making our trip so memorable!

"Very good but did not deal with the squatters at our reserved table …"

The Whitby Hotel offers a quirky, funky vibe that makes for a really enjoyable stay, complete with a residents’ honor bar off the lobby. We had an excellent dinner at the bar, and the food was top-notch. Our experience was slightly marred by a group of three who occupied our table for over an hour after paying, which was frustrating. The hotel kindly offered us a drink to make up for the wait, but it was still a bit annoying. Overall, the atmosphere and dining make The Whitby a standout choice in NYC.

"Fabulous hotel and experience"

Where to begin? Our stay at The Whitby in August 2024 left us with an unforgettable afterglow. From the seamless check-in to our Deluxe Room on the top floor, every detail was a delight. Breakfast was a feast for the senses, beautifully served on Kit Kemp-designed bone china, and the food itself was absolutely delicious. Even during the hotter days, it was a pleasure to be able to open a window. The bathroom was exceptional, and we didn’t even miss having a tub. The room and hotel are every bit as stunning as the photos, complemented by an incredibly helpful staff—so attentive that it’s a shame we forgot some of their names! The mattress and overall sleep experience were superb. The location is ideal for exploring Manhattan, with MoMA, Central Park, and other attractions just steps away, and the Metropolitan Museum or Guggenheim within a pleasant 30–35 minute walk. We immediately felt at home and at ease in this luxurious hotel. Though slightly above our usual budget, it was the perfect choice for a celebration. Should we have another special occasion, we would love to return.

"Pretty boutique hotel in a grim little street.."

We chose this hotel because we enjoy the style of the Charlotte Street and Ham Yard hotels in London, and it certainly didn’t disappoint in that regard. The restaurant and bar area are bright and inviting. We had dinner on our first night, which was pleasant though the menu selection was limited, and enjoyed drinks with live jazz the following evening, which added a lovely touch to our stay. Our room was a good size with fresh, modern décor, comfortable bedding, and a great bathroom with a lovely shower and quality products. The hotel added thoughtful personal touches: a birthday surprise with chocolate cakes, turn-down gifts including hand cream and pillow spray, a box of brownies, and a nightly bottle of Voss water. The reason we rated it 4 stars instead of 5 is mainly due to the view from our window, which overlooked an unfinished and unattractive building, and the street outside, which felt a little shabby compared to the London properties we’re used to. Additionally, there were no tea or coffee-making facilities, which seems like a reasonable expectation given the price. Overall, we had a very pleasant five-night stay in this fresh, modern hotel with thoughtful service and stylish surroundings.

"Not quite what we expected"

The room was very comfortable, clean, and spacious, and the staff were friendly and upbeat, which made our stay enjoyable. However, the view from our room was quite unappealing, and although moving rooms wasn’t an option during a busy period, it was understandable. The street outside felt dirty and shabby, compounded by the endless scaffolding that seems to dominate New York, which was disappointing given the hotel’s USD 4,500 charge for three nights, room only. Additionally, the reception area lacked the “wow” factor we had expected and didn’t match the high standard of the bedrooms. While it is a nice hotel in a convenient location near Central Park, it didn’t quite feel exceptional considering the steep price.

"Niche hotels for true connoisseurs"

This beautiful hotel is perfectly located within walking distance of Central Park and just steps from 5th Avenue. The rooms are elegant, with suites that are generously sized and feature luxurious bathrooms equipped with every comfort. Room service and breakfast are extraordinary, making this hotel a true example of excellence in the heart of New York City.

"Not worth the price"

The Whitby Hotel in Midtown is undoubtedly charming, with original and delightful décor, but it falls short of justifying its high prices. While the aesthetic is appealing at first, the shortcomings quickly become apparent. The staff, though well-intentioned, lack the expertise and polish expected at this level. Unlike institutions such as The Mark or The Carlyle, where an A+ team elevates the experience, here it often feels like minimal effort is the norm. Even the concierge offers little beyond what guests could manage themselves, lacking the connections or knowledge to provide meaningful assistance. Front desk staff are neither cold nor particularly welcoming, and basic safety measures like proper masks during a Covid-era stay are inconsistently observed. The rooms, while stylish, have usability issues. Curtains and shades require manual effort, cords are awkwardly placed, and lighting is poorly designed with a single switch controlling all lights—making navigation cumbersome. Room service lacks heated delivery compartments, meaning food often arrives lukewarm. For the steep rates charged, these practical details should be seamless, as hotels like Baccarat have perfected. In short, The Whitby offers charm and style, but the experience doesn’t match the price tag. If rates were significantly discounted, it would feel more aligned with value, but at full price, expectations exceed reality. The hotel should either elevate its service and amenities or adjust pricing to reflect what it truly delivers.

"Good service and the decor is interesting, creative and enjoyable."

The hotel offers excellent service and a decor that is both creative and engaging, making it a refreshing retreat in the midst of New York City’s hustle and bustle. It’s well-situated for exploring the Theatre District, MoMA, and other nearby attractions. While nightly rates can vary widely, the hotel delivers an enjoyable stay with a distinctive atmosphere that makes it stand out.
